IB DP Courses at Harding

For Grades 11 and 12

Group 1: Language and Literature

11th:

IB DP English A: Literature HL (Year 1)

IB DP English A: Language and Literature SL (Year 1)

IB DP English A: Literature and Performance SL (Year 1)

12th:

IB DP English A: Literature HL - (Year 2 - HL test)

IB DP English A: Language and Literature SL (Year 2 - SL test)

IB DP English A: Literature and Performance SL (Year 2 - SL test)
 

Group 2: Language Acquisition

French, Spanish, or Japanese…Levels 3, 4, or 5

Also: English B (for students in co-taught EL)

Testing options: 

1. take SL ab initio test at Level 3 as a senior
2. take SL test at Level 4 in 11th or 12th grade
3. take SL or HL test at Level 5 in 11th or 12th grade
    

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

11th - 12th: IB DP History of Americas (11th) IB DP 20th Century Topics (12th) (HL test) (satisfies US History, Government and Economics credits)

Group 4: Science (all IB DP sciences are 2-year courses)

IB DP Biology SL/HL (Year 1) - 11th or 12th grade

IB DP Biology SL/HL (Year 2) - 12th grade - take test this year

IB DP Chemistry (Year 1) / Chemistry Accelerated (same class) - 9th, 11th or 12th grade

IB DP Chemistry SL/HL (Year 2) - 11th or 12th grade - take SL exam this year

IB DP Chemistry SL/HL (Year 3) - 12th grade - take HL exam this year

IB DP Design Technology SL - 11th or 12th grade - test at end of year

IB DP Physics SL/HL (Year 1) - 11th or 12th grade

IB DP Physics SL/HL (Year 2) - 12th grade - take test this year
 

Group 5: Mathematics

Option 1:

11th: PreCalculus Accelerated (this is "year 1" of the Math SL course)

12th: IB DP Math Analysis SL (also known as "Calculus")  (take SL Math test)
       or
12th: IB DP Math Studies/Applications SL (take SL Math Studies test)

Option 2:

11th: Algebra 2

12th: IB DP Math Studies/Applications SL (take SL Math Studies test)

Option 3:

11th: IB DP Math Studies/Applications SL (SL math studies test)

12th: no math course (Math Studies level math is considered a "4th year" math) - or PreCalculus

Option 4:

10th: PreCalculus Accelerated (this is "year 1" of the Math SL course)

11th: IB DP Math Analysis SL (Calculus - SL math test possible)

12th: IB DP Math Analysis HL (HL math test)

To help with your IB DP math decisions, talk to your math teacher or IB DP Coordinator.

NOTE: the math courses will be changing significantly in the 2019-2021 school years as we align with the IB's curriculum changes.

Group 6: Arts

IB DP Theatre (can take SL or HL test, depending on background/schedule/experience) - see Mr. Coleman for details

IB DP Music (can take SL or HL test, depending on background/schedule/experience) - see Ms. Romero for details

IB DP Visual Arts (same as above, but need to take at least a year of art) - see Mr. Cook for details

IB DP Film SL or HL - see Ms. Zeng for details (this class can satisfy either technology or art graduation requirements)

Theory of Knowledge:

A required year-long class for senior IB Diploma candidates.  Any 11th or 12th grader may take this course.  See Mr. Stagg for more information about ToK.
