Harding is Proud to be an International
Baccalaureate World School
What is IB?
International Baccalaureate (IB) is a comprehensive and
rigorous pre-university course of studies that leads to examinations for highly
motivated juniors and seniors.
What does it mean to be an IB World School?
Harding is one of 3 IB World Schools in St.
Paul. The IB Program started at Harding in 1993. It is
a special honor to be designated as an IB World School, since there are only 11
in the entire state of Minnesota.
As an IB World School, Harding is a member of the IB Organization, which is a
growing team of internationally-minded schools that provide students with
quality college preparation in 94 countries.
Why IB?
Students enrolled in IB classes receive a rigorous education
that best prepares them for the intellectual environment at a college or
university. The IB Program is challenging and interdisciplinary by
nature. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded education and to fully prepare
students for the rigors of college work. IB diploma holders are admitted to the
most selective universities in more than 102 countries.
Who can take IB classes?
Any student who is motivated to participate in stimulating
classes is welcome to enroll in Harding's IB Program, either by taking the
complete IB curriculum or by choosing individual IB courses in his/her area of
interest. We encourage all students to try at least one IB or IP Prep class
during their time at Harding so they can expand their minds and challenge
themselves to the fullest.
What is my commitment?
Students signing up for IB Prep classes in 9th and
10th grade make a commitment to be in those classes for the entire
school year. Students signing up for World Literature, History, Chemistry, and
Physics IB classes in 11th grade make a 2-year commitment to be in
those classes for both 11th and 12th grades. Students are
expected to take Higher Level IB exams for World Literature and History in May
of their senior year. If a student wishes to change or drop any IB or IB prep
course, it must be approved by a guardian, the IB teacher, the student’s
counselor, IB coordinator, and the IB principal.
Diploma vs. Certificate
Students have the choice to pursue a full diploma, which is
a full load of IB courses from 6 different subject areas, or to pursue
certificates, which allows students to select IB courses that match their
strengths and interests.
Diploma candidates complete IB tests in 6 subject areas.
They must also complete Creativity, Action, and Service hours. In addition,
Diploma candidates take Theory of Knowledge, and write an extended essay on the
topic of their choice.
The IB diploma is recognized by colleges and universities
throughout the world for admission, advanced placement, and advanced standing.
The
Exams
In May, juniors and seniors take
IB examinations which are offered in all areas. This is the culmination of the
students work. Successful scores on these IB tests may also lead to advanced
college placement and/or college credits.
IB
Prep
Harding offers a comprehensive IB Prep program that seeks to
prepare and challenge students for future success in our Junior and Senior IB
diploma program. These courses help to develop and refine higher level
thinking skills, writing techniques, and oral communication.
