Principal's May/June Newsletter

The Principal’s Corner

Dear Parents,

I have been eagerly awaiting Spring and the warmer weather.  April is the beginning of baseball, softball, golf, tennis, badminton, and track.  April also brought the beginning of required state testing.

Our students have been focusing their attention on performing their best on these tests and I want to commend them for their efforts during this stressful time.  I also want to thank the families for supporting our students throughout the entire process.

We are also preparing for end of the year activities including awards programs and graduation (June 2).  Please keep an eye on our calendar located on our website http://harding.spps.org so that you can plan accordingly.  As we wind down this school year, our top priority continues to be the improvement of student learning.  We will soon begin our third and final prompt of our building-wide writing initiative that has been spearheaded through our Academies and Foundations classes.  Our school-wide emphasis has focused on improving writing skills of every student and has also had an enormous impact on our own professional development as an entire staff.

We wish to thank parents for attending Parent Teacher Conferences on April 24, 2008.

Our incoming 9th grade registration forms for 2008-2009 have been received and we are actively beginning the process of scheduling for the first quarter for the 2008/2009 school year.  If you have questions regarding ninth grade, please call 651-793-4744.

Also, beginning the new school year (September 2008), we will be starting a new schedule that includes a 7-period day.  Grading will be on a quarter system rather than the current trimester system.

Current students noticed during their course registration the vast array of choices that we are offering next year.   They can be confident that we will do our best to assure that they receive choices that fit their interests and needs.  The next school year will also bring about increased emphasis in supporting all of our students who need extra time and help to learn the required essential skills from each of their classes.

Finally, congratulations on a great year at Harding.  In my first year as principal, I have noticed an amazing shift in the school’s climate.  The feel in this building is all about learning!  As a whole, our students have really displayed tremendous effort this past year and they are truly engaged in knowing what it means to be a successful “learner” at Harding.
