44 of our Naval JROTC cadets competed in the annual Area 3 West drill meet at the Recruit Training Center (bootcamp) in Great Lakes, IL. They competed in five events: Drill, Color Guard, Personnel Inspection, Academics, and Physical Fitness. There were 17 schools competing from a seven state region (MN, WI, IL, IN, OH, MI,IA). ACADEMIC - our cadets won the 1st place trophy, and out of 160 cadets (16 teams of 10 cadets each) two of our cadets, Muachi Lee and Blong Xiong, won medals for tying for the highest individual score. DRILL - our cadets won the 5th place trophy in a field of 17 teams COLOR GUARD - our color guard placed 9th out of 17 PERSONNEL INSPECTION - placed 10th out of 17 PHYSICAL FITNESS - Our cadets dominated, but disqualified due to being one runner short on the relay race due to an administrative oversight. But they won 7 of the 20 available individual medals for situps and pushups to cadence. Female pushups: Ka Xiong - 1st place (113 pushups) Bi Xiong - 2nd place (91 pushups) Lisa Xiong - 3rd place (88 pushups) Male pushups: Shuemeng Lor - 1st place (184 pushups) Blong Xiong - 3rd place (134 pushups) Male situps: Shuemeng Lor - 2nd place (219 situps) Sue Chang - 3rd place (216 situps) Our cadets worked extremely hard and showed immense self-discipline to attain this level of physical fitness. Our "weakest" female did 47 pushups. Our academic team, every one of which speaks a language other than English at home, spent countless hours studying a binder of 2845 questions.
