Health Career Fair at the University of Minnesota

On Tuesday, November 16th, ninety-three Harding students and five staff members bused to the University of Minnesota to take part in a Health Career Fair.  The idea for the Fair came from Jeremy Carlson, a second year medical student who had contacted Hardings Medical and Environmental Studies Academy (MESA) over the summer.  Jeremy wanted to give urban high school students a taste of what was available at the U of M in the field of healthcare.  MESA was only too happy to accept his invitation!

Students from MESA, as well as from other Harding Academies, had the opportunity to talk with University students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and hospital administration.  In addition, our students (looking just marvelous and professional) got to interpret X-ray films, take blood pressures, learn about brain plasticity by wearing weird goggles and throwing bean bags, examine a preserved human brain, and tour parts of the medical school.

It was an enjoyable and valuable field trip!  Thanks to Del Breyfogle and the Job Shadowing program for making the trip possible.  We also thank Jeremy and all the other University students who took part.  We look forward to seeing them soon when they come to MESA Foundations classes to teach us more about whats possible for our students!
